GTA 6 characters and map: Lucia, Jason and Leonida explained

GTA 6 takes the series back to a sunny, chaotic version of Florida. Everything here is based on Rockstar’s official trailers, including the October launch trailer, and on the information Rockstar has published on its website. We don’t include leaks or rumours, so this guide stays spoiler-light.

Use it as a quick introduction before 19 November. It covers who you will play as, who you are likely to meet, and what kind of places are waiting in Leonida.

Comparison of GTA 6's two leads, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval
What the trailers have shown about the two main characters so far.

The story set-up in one paragraph

Rockstar’s official website sums up the premise in a few lines. Jason and Lucia have always known the odds are stacked against them. When an easy score goes wrong, they end up in a criminal conspiracy that reaches across the state of Leonida, and they must rely on each other to get out alive. That is all Rockstar has said officially. Still, it is enough to set the tone: a crime story about two people, not one lone hero.

The two main characters

Lucia Caminos

Lucia is the first female lead in a 3D Grand Theft Auto game. The first trailer opened with her in prison, and Rockstar describes her as someone who learned to fight from a young age. Getting out is only the beginning of her story.

Her prison scenes and tough background suggest a character with a lot to prove. For a series that has mostly followed male criminals, she is the biggest change GTA 6 brings to its cast.

Jason Duval

Jason grew up around grifters and crooks. According to Rockstar, he wants an easy life, but things just keep getting harder. He and Lucia team up, and the trailers suggest that their relationship sits at the centre of the story. It looks like a modern take on the Bonnie and Clyde idea.

How this compares with GTA 5

GTA 5 let you switch between three main characters: Michael, Franklin and Trevor. GTA 6 has two leads who are a couple, so their relationship is likely to matter more than in any earlier GTA. Rockstar hasn’t explained how switching between them will work, so treat any detailed claims as guesses for now.

Other characters Rockstar has shown

Rockstar’s official website also introduces a supporting cast. It includes Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre’Quan Priest, the duo Real Dimez, Raul Bautista and Brian Heder. This table shows who they are:

CharacterWho they are
Cal HamptonJason’s friend, convinced everyone is watching him
Boobie IkeLocal legend and businessman
Dre’Quan PriestRuns a music label
Real DimezA duo
Raul BautistaExperienced bank robber
Brian HederRuns a smuggling business in the Keys

Expect many more faces in the final game. GTA stories are known for large casts of strange, funny and dangerous side characters. Rockstar has only introduced a handful so far.

What is Leonida?

Leonida is GTA 6’s fictional state, Rockstar’s version of Florida. It is much more than one city. Rockstar has shown these regions:

RegionWhat it’s like
Vice CityThe neon-lit, beach-side city that fans remember from GTA: Vice City, now in a modern version
Leonida KeysA chain of islands with boats, bars and sunshine
GrassriversHuge swamps and wetlands, home to alligators
Port GellhornA rougher, run-down port area
AmbrosiaA rural, industrial area
Mount Kalaga National ParkForests, mountains and wild nature

Rockstar hasn’t revealed the official map size, so any “bigger than GTA 5” claims you see online are guesses for now.

The real places behind the regions

Several regions clearly echo real parts of Florida. Vice City has always been the series’ version of Miami. The Leonida Keys are widely compared with the Florida Keys, and Grassrivers with the Everglades. Rockstar rarely copies real maps exactly, though. Expect a compressed, exaggerated version that is built for driving, flying and causing trouble.

Vice City: then and now

Vice City first appeared as the main setting of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, a 2002 game set in 1986. GTA 6 brings the city into the present day. Instead of 1980s pastel suits and synth music, the trailers show smartphones, live streams and packed nightclubs. Fans of the original will recognise the beaches and neon, but the people living there belong to the social-media age.

What the trailers tell us about the world

  • Social media is everywhere. The trailers are full of phone videos, live streams and viral clips. This looks like a big part of the game’s satire.
  • Lots of nature and water. Swamps, beaches, boats and wildlife suggest much more variety than Los Santos.
  • Busy, detailed crowds. Beaches, clubs and streets look packed with people.

The first trailer arrived in December 2023, the second in May 2025 and the launch trailer on 15 October 2026. Watching all three back to back is the best spoiler-light preview of the tone, the cast and the scenery.

Tip: Watch the trailers on Rockstar’s official website or channels rather than re-uploads. Re-uploads often add misleading titles or “leaked” clips that may not be real.

How to explore Leonida without spoilers

Once the game is out, the map is a spoiler minefield. A few habits help you discover it yourself:

  1. Avoid full map images shared online in the first weeks. Many reveal late-game areas.
  2. Skip “every location” videos until you finish the story.
  3. Mute character names on social media if you want story twists to stay a surprise.
  4. Let the story lead. Some earlier GTA games opened new areas as the story moved on, so there is no need to rush to every corner on day one.

Our GTA 6 launch checklist includes step-by-step instructions for muting spoilers on social media and on PS5.

What we still don’t know

  • How the story switches between Lucia and Jason
  • The final map size
  • Details about online play

We’ll update this guide after launch, but without spoilers in the main text.

From PixelAlex: What I’m looking forward to most is playing as Lucia and Jason together, and getting back to Vice City. A modern return to Vice City is something fans have wanted for years, and I’m one of them.
