The best story-driven RPGs are Baldur’s Gate 3, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Mass Effect Legendary Edition, each with memorable characters and choices that matter.
Role-playing games (RPGs) are where gaming’s best storytelling lives. These are long games, often 50 hours or more, so we’ve included what makes each one special and who it’s best for.
From PixelAlex: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is my favourite game of all time. Its world, characters and storytelling set the standard for me, and it’s the game I measure every other RPG against.
A great RPG story is not only about the main plot. It is also about companions who react to your choices, side quests with their own small dramas, and a world that feels lived in. Every game below does at least two of those things very well.

1. Baldur’s Gate 3
Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
A Dungeons & Dragons adventure where almost every choice matters. Its companions have real personalities, and its freedom constantly surprises you.
Combat is turn-based and follows tabletop rules, including dice rolls for many actions. Conversations can end in a fight, a friendship or a romance, depending on what you say. The whole campaign can also be played in co-op, which turns it into a digital tabletop evening.
Best for: players who love making decisions.
2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Platforms: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch
Geralt’s search for his adopted daughter is full of side quests that are better than many games’ main stories. The Blood and Wine expansion is one of the best ever made.
The writing rarely gives you a clean “good” option. Helping one village can harm another, and the consequences often appear hours later. The other expansion, Hearts of Stone, is shorter but holds one of the series’ best villains.
Best for: fantasy fans who like mature, grey choices.
3. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
A stylish, French-inspired fantasy RPG mixing turn-based battles with real-time dodging and parrying. It won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025, and its story deserves the praise.
Once a year, a being called the Paintress paints a number, and everyone of that age disappears. The latest number is 33, and a new expedition sets out to stop her. That simple, sad idea leads somewhere much bigger, so avoid spoilers if you can.
Best for: fans of classic Japanese-style RPGs who want something fresh.
4. Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
A whole sci-fi trilogy in one package. Your decisions carry from game to game, and your crew feels like family.
You play Commander Shepard, and squad members can live, die or change depending on your earlier decisions. The first game feels the oldest, but the remaster improves it, and the payoff in the later games is worth the patience.
Best for: sci-fi fans who want a long saga.
5. Persona 5 Royal
Platforms: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch
Live a school year in Tokyo by day and steal the hearts of corrupt adults by night. It’s stylish, with an incredible soundtrack.
The calendar is the heart of the game. Each day you decide whether to study, work a part-time job, spend time with friends or explore dungeons. Those friendships make your team stronger and tell many of the best small stories. Expect a very long playthrough.
Best for: anime fans and players who enjoy managing time.
6. Red Dead Redemption 2
Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Arthur Morgan’s story is one of the most emotional in gaming. It’s slow, but deeply rewarding.
The gang’s camp is where the story breathes. Small talk around the fire, chores and arguments slowly show how loyalty turns into doubt. Missions can feel strict, but the characters stay with players long after the credits.
Best for: players who love detail and patience.
7. Cyberpunk 2077
Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2
A neon future city, great characters, and the excellent Phantom Liberty spy expansion.
Your character, V, shares their head with Johnny Silverhand, a rebellious rock star played by Keanu Reeves. Their uneasy partnership drives the story, and several side characters have quest lines as strong as the main plot. Different endings depend on the relationships you build.
Best for: sci-fi and first-person fans.
8. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II
Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S
A realistic medieval adventure in Bohemia, with no magic or dragons. Your choices and your character’s skills really matter.
Henry is not a chosen hero. He needs practice to fight, read and persuade, and people react to his clothes, reputation and even his smell. Saving outside of autosaves uses a drink called Saviour Schnapps, so plan your risks.
Best for: history fans and anyone who wants realism.
9. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Platforms: PS5, PC, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2
The second part of the Final Fantasy VII remake project. A huge, emotional adventure with fantastic characters. Play Final Fantasy VII Remake first.
Cloud and his friends travel across large, open regions, and the game mixes big story moments with many mini-games and side activities. Fans of the 1997 original will spot changes to familiar events, which is part of the fun.
Best for: players who have finished Final Fantasy VII Remake.
10. Metaphor: ReFantazio
Platforms: PC, PlayStation, Xbox
From the team behind Persona: a fantasy election, a tense political story, and excellent turn-based combat.
Like Persona, it uses a calendar, so you balance travel, friendships and dungeons before deadlines. The story deals with prejudice and power in a direct, thoughtful way. Turn-based fights move quickly, and weak enemies can be defeated in real time on the field.
Best for: Persona fans who want a new world.
11. Disco Elysium
Platforms: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch
A detective RPG with almost no fighting, carried by sharp, funny and often brilliant dialogue.
You wake up with no memory, and your skills talk to you like voices in your head, often giving bad advice. Failing a check can be just as entertaining as passing it. It reads almost like an interactive novel, so it suits players who enjoy reading.
Best for: readers who love dialogue.
12. Dragon Quest XI S
Platforms: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch
A warm, classic adventure, and a great first turn-based RPG.
The hero, his friends and the story follow familiar fairy-tale patterns, but with real charm and humour. Battles are easy to understand, and the difficulty grows slowly. It is a good bridge for anyone who later wants to try Persona or Metaphor.
Best for: beginners to the genre.
Tip: Most RPGs on this list have an easier difficulty setting, such as Explorer mode in Baldur’s Gate 3 or Story mode in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. If you mainly play for the story, choosing it is perfectly fine, and you can usually change it later.
How to pick the right RPG for you
Ask yourself three questions before you start a 50-hour game.
- Do you prefer turn-based or real-time combat? Baldur’s Gate 3, Persona 5 Royal, Metaphor: ReFantazio and Dragon Quest XI S are turn-based. The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II are real-time. Clair Obscur mixes both.
- How much reading do you enjoy? Disco Elysium and Baldur’s Gate 3 have a lot of text. Red Dead Redemption 2 and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth rely more on cinematic scenes.
- How much time do you have? Persona 5 Royal and Baldur’s Gate 3 can last over a hundred hours. Disco Elysium is shorter than most.
